GLSCL roundup: Locos improve to 8-8

Lima Locos 13, Michigan Monarchs 8

The Locos broke out the bats on Tuesday night with 13 runs on nine hits in a five-run victory over Michigan.

Blake Bowen (University of Akron) started things off with a two-run homer in the first inning and after the Monarchs tied things up in the second on a two-run double from Scoop Harden (transfer portal), Lima broke the game wide open with crooked numbers in the fifth and sixth innings.

Sebastian Alexander (Coastal Carolina) broke the tie with an RBI single, then Kaden Brown (Kennesaw State) cleared the bases with a three-run double to make it 6-2.

The Locos took advantage of three Michigan errors in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-2.

Alexander and Brown combined for three hits and four runs batted in, while Bowen finished the night 1 for 5 with three RBI and one run scored.

Seven of the nine innings were pitched by local arms with Ryan Yingst (Tiffin University) getting his second start and going four innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

Skyler Lhamon, a recent Bath grad who’s heading to Olney Central College, tossed the next three innings in his Locos debut and got the win. He allowed four runs on five hits before Calvin Urish (Barton County Community College) finished the game.

Jack Jones (Michigan State) was the losing pitcher for Michigan after allowing six earned runs on five hits in five innings.

The Monarchs got multi-hit efforts from Alonzo Paul (Ohio State), Tanner Mally (Western Michigan) and Reginald Sharpe (Michigan State). Paul led the way with three hits.

After Tuesday night’s series opener, both teams sit at 8-8 on the season.

Grand Lake Mariners 8, Hamilton Joes 1

Last-place Grand Lake got the best of first-place Hamilton with eight runs in the final three innings on Tuesday night.

Jackson Taylor (Indiana State) doubled in Johnny Nixon (transfer portal) to break the scoreless tie, and then Stefan Di Corrado (Dartmouth) singled home a pair of insurance runs.

That turned out to be plenty of support for starter Mason Reyes (transfer portal) who was brilliant on the mound, going seven innings and limiting the Joes to one earned run on three hits.

Di Corrado and Taylor both recorded two hits and Jackson Rains (transfer portal) drove in a pair of runs.

Carson Brower (Bellarmine University) was the losing pitcher for Hamilton after allowing three earned runs on five hits in one inning.

Jamie Palmese (East Tennessee State), Brayden Fraasman (North Carolina State) and Mitchel Szymczak (Lake Erie College) were responsible for the Joes’ three hits.

The win improves Grand Lake’s record to 5-11, while Hamilton sits at 11-5.

Xenia Scouts 5, South Ohio Copperheads 4

Jacob Winzenread (Southern Indiana) drove in Troy Lynch (Minnesota Duluth) in the 10th inning to give the Scouts a one-run victory over South Ohio.

Lynch paced Xenia’s offense all game long, going 3 for 4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Noah Ruiz (Biola) added three hits and scored twice for the Scouts.

Blake Wentz (Biola) got the win after pitching a clean last two innings. Starter Brendan Holland (Lourdes) went five innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits.

Elijah Laurent (Olivet Nazarene) was charged with the loss after he pitched the 10th and gave up the final run.

The Copperheads got three hits from Alex Ungar (Sacred Heart) and three runs batted in from Hunter Strong (Spalding).

Xenia now moves past the .500 mark at 10-9, while South Ohio’s record drops to 6-10.
