Ex-Bengal Ross attempting NFL comeback

CINCINNATI — Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver John Ross is attempting an NFL comeback after retiring last July, according to a report.

Ross, 28, will participate in the Philadelphia Eagles’ rookie minicamp this week on a tryout basis, according to NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo. The five-year NFL veteran retired in July 2023, six months after signing a futures/reserve contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in January 2023.

Ross last played in an NFL game on Dec. 12, 2021, for the New York Giants, which he played one season for in 2021. Prior to that, the former University of Washington standout played four seasons for the Bengals, which drafted him ninth in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Coming out of Washington, Ross set the NFL Combine record for fastest 40-yard dash time ever recorded at 4.22 seconds, a record that stood until Xavier Worthy ran a 4.21 40-yard dash at this year’s combine. However, despite his speed and high draft pick, Ross never found consistent success in the NFL.

In his five NFL seasons, Ross has recorded 62 catches for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns, along with nine rushes for 41 yards, in 37 career games, including 21 starts.
