FEMA warns against tornado-related scams

COLUMBUS — FEMA sent out a warning for disaster survivors to avoid scams posing as federal and state disaster workers including themselves and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The warning said con artists try to get money or personal information from survivors of disasters, such as the March 14 tornadoes. Anyone from Auglaize, Crawford, Darke, Delaware, Hancock, Licking, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Richland and Union counties should be wary of giving out that information.

FEMA said it and other disaster workers will never ask for money or payment in any form. If you receive a letter or visit from a FEMA inspector but did not apply for assistance, you should let FEMA know by calling 800-621-3362.

FEMA said its inspectors will not collect or ask to confirm personal financial information.

If you are the victim of a scam, FEMA said to report it to your local police or sheriff’s department.
