Bath’s Shields wins Rotary Four-Way Test essay contest

LIMA — The Lima Rotary Club heard from the winners of its Four-Way Test essay contest during Monday’s meeting at Veterans Memorial Civic Center.

First-place winner Leah Shields, of Bath High school, and second-place winner Daniel Koh, from Shawnee High School, both presented their essays to club members, showing how Rotary’s four-way test could be applied to mental health concerns.

Shields’ essay urged people to consider what’s good about their lives and their bodies while looking in a mirror, instead of focusing on perceived negative attributes.

The four-way test is an ethical guide to apply to issues, asking these four questions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Third-place winner Ariana Custer, of Lima Senior High School, was unable to present Monday.
