Typically the main Christmas worship service is held the evening before Jan. 7, with full-throated proclamations that Christ is born. But Greek and some other Orthodox observe Christmas on Dec. 25, using a newer calendar. In Ukraine, the matter took on political dimensions amid war and schism. The national government and one Orthodox church observed Christmas on Dec. 25, distancing themselves from Russian tradition, but another Orthodox church retained the Jan. 7 observance.
