LIMA — The Lima Noon Sertoma Club Original Pancake Day serves up to 10,000 pancakes every year and this year seemed to be no different.
Club president Carmen Cecala-Wells said it was great to see the turnout at Lima Senior High School for the event that helps raise funds for Sertoma activities and service.
“People want to get out, get their breakfast and go watch football,” she said. “It’s a tradition in our community that people have done for years and I was getting stories from people who were saying they did it in high school and are now bringing their kids and grandkids. It’s a way for us to give back to the community.”
Jill Triplett said she brought her parents, both former Sertoma members who participated in the event when she was a child.
“Dad called last night and asked if I was going and I said of course, I am,” she said. “They ran out of orange juice this year, but it’s always delicious. It’s always good and mom and dad ran into old friends so we all had a really nice time.”
David Cooley said after returning from Colorado, he was glad to resume attending the breakfast.
“I have more to take home for my wife for lunch,” he said. “It shows that the Lima community has very nice things to offer and there are so many people here volunteering. It’s just a very positive event.”
The event raises money for the club’s Summer Speech and Hearing Program, the Firefighter of the Year award and scholarship funds.
“We couldn’t do it without the volunteers,” Cecala-Wells said. “We have students here from several different schools, including Lima Senior and Bath, and spouses and friends of Sertoma members. We could not do this with this much volume of people coming in and out without them.”
