Wilson holds veterans event as Election Day nears

LIMA — Tamie Wilson, the Democratic candidate for Ohio’s 4th congressional district, slammed incumbent Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, for voting against 2022’s PACT Act at a Veterans Appreciation Lunch on Thursday afternoon.

Wilson has hammered Jordan throughout the election cycle for not doing enough to help voters in the district while standing on her message, and the event was no different.

“I just hope that people in Lima and the 4th District understand that I care about everyone,” she said. “I support our veterans because they need more support, and they need it when they’re serving and when they get out. Being a former military wife, I know they don’t get paid enough, and I remember how terrible our housing was, as well as how tough being separated from your family is.”

Wilson spoke to area supporters including veterans at The Met in downtown Lima before showing the movie “Against All Enemies.” She repeated talking points about the district losing jobs throughout Jordan’s tenure in office, as well as sharing concerns about the Jan. 6 insurgency and domestic terrorism threats.

“I went through an FBI training about domestic terrorism,” she said. “There is so much we can do that we’re not doing. I’m really concerned we’re not doing that. It’s one of the things on my platform.”

She called Jordan out for not voting for the PACT Act, which expanded benefits to veterans who were exposed to toxic substances such as burn pits during their service.

“Who can ever vote against our veterans?” Wilson said after the event. “They put their lives on the line, and the chemicals that they’re exposed to live in their bodies forever. At some point, they are going to have health issues, and we need to support them, so there’s no excuse for that.”

As the final days of the race wind down, Wilson said she is working to connect with as many people as possible as she hops from each event.

“I’m really at peace. I think I’ve done everything I could possibly do,” she said. “We’ve had veterans lunches, family fun days, and we’ve gone to all the fairs in the district. I just tried to connect with everyone as much as I could to let them know I’m here and want to hear from everyone and learn as much as possible.”

Over the past year, Jordan has stuck to his own talking points, calling out the Biden administration, Democrats and their policies on foreign relations, the economy and the border, as well as stumping on the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and free speech on social media.
