Church choir celebrates Lima’s unity

LIMA — Several members of the Lima community hope to leave a legacy of unity.

On Sunday afternoon, Com_Unity Ministries sponsored a citywide choir concert. The choir sang classic hymns, modern worship songs, recited scripture and read words of poetry to the audience at St. John Catholic Church.

The organization was created several years ago to bring area churches together and celebrate their shared belief of the gospel. Not only did the concert commemorate the ministries impact in the community but the longstanding home of one of the oldest churches in Lima.

“The ministry is honoring our five years of existence and the 100th anniversary of St. John’s Catholic Church,” said director Mary Blanche Hengstler.

The ensemble was filled with 11 people from churches in the surrounding areas.

“We have three Catholic Churches, several Baptist churches, Bible Believers, Lima Community and a church from Kenton,” Hengstler said. “We have two wonderful pastors speaking, and Father (David) Ross will speak. Each will give a different aspect of unity.”

Com_Unity Ministries hoped to bridge the gap by bringing the local churches together under one roof.

“There are so many scriptures on diversity and unity,” Hengstler said. “I don’t think we honor them enough in the modern day. We throw around diversity and inclusion, but there is no action.”

The ministry also encourages others to “get out of their comfort zone and try something new.”

“That is what the ministry works for inclusion, unity and to help curb the violence,” Hengstler said.

The organization also encouraged attending community members to bring non-perishable food items to the concert.
