Silverman to headline LSO opener

LIMA — The Lima Symphony Orchestra will kick off its 2024-25 season with electricity.

LSO Marketing Coordinator Jacob Bassitt said “Electric Love” will feature a special performance by electric violinist Tracy Silverman starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Lima’s Veterans Memorial Civic Center, 7 Town Square.

“We’re kind of piecing together this aspect of the electric violin, which is something that’s still a bit new to the industry, especially in symphony orchestras, with these classic pieces like ‘Romeo and Juliet Suite’ and ‘For the Greater Groove’,” he said. “Tracy actually wrote some of these pieces including ‘Groove’, ‘Chorinho’ and ‘Overture from “Love Song to the Sun”’.”

The concert will also feature guest conductor Karl Hirzer leading the show that also features pieces including “Fanfare for Orchestra” by Alexandra du Bois and “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich.

“When you think of your classic symphony orchestra, ‘electric’ is not really in the name or in the description,” Bassitt said. “We’re having a very unique, contemporary take on it to start with the incorporation of the electric violin.”

To start out the season with this kind of show is a big deal.

“We’re really excited to kick it off,” Bassitt added. “I think the symphony is constantly growing a new wave. Whether it’s updating our programming and marketing or just growing as a non-profit, we’re expecting large audiences for these programs and to keep providing the arts to the community and the greater Lima area.”

Fans should not hesitate to go to the show because the area might not see a show like this again.

“Usually this is something you have to travel far to see,” Bassitt said. “Being able to experience things like the electric violin and world-renowned artists like Silverman is not something that’s going to come across people’s plates very often. It’s really exciting and people should take the opportunity to jump on this while they can because you never know when it’s going to come back.”
