Convoy Lions to pay third-graders to read

CONVOY — The Convoy Lions Club is paying Crestview Elementary School students to read.

The club’s Reinforcement of Advanced Reading program, known as ROAR, is inviting third-graders at the school to choose books from an approved reading list available at the school library, according to a news release about the program.

Each time students complete a book, they’ll have the chance to earn cash by taking a test to demonstrate their knowledge of what they read. If the student scores at least 80% on the test, the student will earn cash.

The club will pay students a nickel per point they earn throughout the year, with point values assigned to each book based on difficulty, to motivate third-graders to read.

“Parent involvement in this process is critical in providing the motivation at home necessary to propel the student to higher grades and future success,” club members said in the release. “We ask that every parent take a keen interest in their students’ progress, because reading is a tremendous indicator of future success in life.”
