Roses and Thorns

You know how it goes: You get a little busy focusing on other things. Your rose garden gets overgrown, drowned out by thistles and weeds. You give up on it for a while, but eventually you miss its beauty.

That’s more or less what happened with The Lima News’ Roses and Thorns, which return today after 461 days away. We hope you help us tend our garden with your own suggestions. See below for details on how to share your ideas.

Rose: To Emily Kruse and Richard Glick, who prove that sometimes love is just delayed, not denied. They started dating in 1954 after meeting at a little country church in Shinbone, east of New Knoxville in Auglaize County. After a year, they broke up and found other people. After each lost two spouses, Kruse searched out her old flame, finding him in Lima. They dated again, and on June 23, they married.

Thorn: To Amanda Hovanec, who a federal judge decided will spend 40 years in prison in the death of her estranged husband, Timothy Hovanec, as part of a custody dispute. She and her former boyfriend and mother were all sentenced on the crime, which U.S. District Court Judge James Knepp II said was “as bad a crime as I have seen or could have imagined.” In her supposed fight for her children, she robbed them of their father, their mother and their grandmother.

Rose: Lima Senior graduate Jason Upthegrove recently received a “Rising Stars” award from Plastics News. Upthegrove, 29, grew up in Lima and graduated from Xavier University. He now works as a rigid PDV technical specialist for Baerlocher USA, where he develops metal stabilizers and lubricant packages.
