LIMA — Demolition has begun on the building at 221 N. Main St. Thursday morning, one of the most tangible steps yet in bringing a new county administration building to downtown Lima.

The demolition came after Allen County Commissioners approved a $21,000 contract with Ben’s Construction a week ago to bring the brick building down. Commissioners have previously said this property, along with the adjacent property where the former Hofeller, Hiatt and Clark men’s clothing store building currently sits, will both be cleared to allow for the construction of a new county administration building housing multiple county agencies.

The Hofeller building is currently under the care of the Allen County Land Bank, which means that a separate demolition contract will be needed to tear that building down.
