Ottawa River Coalition pulls tires from riverbed

LIMA — As part of its continuing Ottawa River cleanup efforts, members of the non-profit Ottawa River Coalition took time Friday to remove more than 50 tires from a 150-yard stretch of the river between the Metcalf Street bridge and the river dam.

Friday’s cleanup efforts were part of the coalition’s “Tired of Tires” project established in 2023. Removing tires is important not only for the river’s visual appeal, but it also mitigates the impact on wildlife through the leaching of chemicals into the water, the flow of water being impeded and animals getting trapped in the tires.

“It feels good to make a difference where we can,” ORC Chairman Adam Haunhorst said in a statement.

The City of Lima Public Works and Streets departments aided in the project by providing a dump truck for the pulled tires.
