Ottawa man gets 90 days jail for reduced charges

OTTAWA — An Ottawa man was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 90 days suspended Thursday in the Putnam County Common Pleas Court for reduced, first-degree misdemeanor charges of attempted illegal use of a minor or impaired person in nudity-oriented material or performance and attempted possession of criminal tools.

Jacob Langhals, 20, is required to report to jail on Sept. 27 at 9 a.m.

Langhals was indicted on the same charges in June, but as fifth-degree felonies. He pleaded guilty in August to the reduced charges.

The charges originated from pictures Langhals still had on his laptop from when he was dating a 17-year-old girl when he was 18 years old. Langhals was keeping the laptop at a friend’s house, and when police recently executed a search on the house, they found the laptop with the pictures still on it.

The sentencing followed the state’s recommendation of 90 days in jail. Langhals’ attorney, Elizabeth Smith, wanted no jail time for Langhals and cited the municipal court case in 2022 where Langhals was sentenced to 90 days in jail on the same topic. She said Langhals had not looked at those pictures in years and was unaware they were still in his possession.

Judge Keith Schierloh said he kept the sentencing consistent with other similar cases to be fair.

Langhals was formerly enlisted in the Marines but was medically discharged. He’s currently talking to an Army recruiter to enlist after he completes his sentence.
