Jordan takes seat on Lima council

LIMA — Newly sworn-in Lima city councilwoman Jeannine Jordan said it was fitting one of her first votes was a resolution to appreciate teachers, given that she taught in Lima schools for 35 years.

City council swore in Jordan at Monday night’s meeting to replace the now-retired Peggy Ehora in the Fourth Ward spot after an almost two month-long search.

“I appreciate all the support I am getting, and I am sure I am going to be on a learning curve,” she said, sharing comments on the earlier resolution. “As a former teacher, I just want to say how much easier it makes it for teachers when students just show up to class.”

Jordan, who was born and raised in Lima, also shared her hopes for her time with council.

“I’m still just learning the basics, so it’s hard to have much vision, except I would like it if the basic image of Lima improved,” she said. “Tonight, the mayor reported crime rates are much lower than they had been, but we all have this vision of Lima as being dangerous and dying. It would be nice to totally put that to rest with work and action.”

In addition to a resolution to appreciate teachers, council recognized outgoing Lima Fire Chief Andy Heffner for his years of service.

“Unless you’re in service to your people, you’re not doing your job,” Heffner said, addressing his well-wishers. “Because the further up you get, the more lives you are more responsible for.”

Council passed all ordinances, including ones to accept a donation from the Lima Community Improvement Corporation to expand the Better Blocks for Business budget, funding for the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Allen, Auglaize and Hardin Counties and funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
