Concert Band to close out season at Lima Senior

LIMA — The Lima Area Concert Band is set to close out its season with music from the stage and screen.

Concert band vice-president Marilyn Roth Basinger said the show, scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Lima Senior High School Auditorium, will feature popular music from productions like “West Side Story”, “Porgy and Bess” and classic cartoons.

“I think it’s really an enjoyable performance,” she said. “There are a lot of easy listening pieces and they’re generally well-received by our audience.”

The experience will be a new one for the audience as the band performs at an unfamiliar venue at the high school.

“We’re interested to know how our audience and musicians enjoy this new venue,” Basinger said. “We believe it’s going to be easily accessible and convenient for the audience and we enjoy playing for our friends and family members, as well as the community at large.”

Finishing the season means capping off a schedule beginning in March that involved months of volunteer work.

“We begin our rehearsals in mid-March and we play through mid-September,” Basinger said. “As I said, it’s an all-volunteer organization and we have the financial support of community members and organizations. We really enjoy playing together and we’ve got a pretty long and successful history of being together.”

Saxophone soloist George Wolfe will join the band, but Basinger said the most important thing is creating a fun evening for the audience.

“It’s about the enjoyment and enrichment of having local live performances,” she said. “It’s everyone working together and communicating together. That’s what makes it so enjoyable and fulfilling and rewarding.”
