One dead after fiery three semi-truck crash

DINSMORE TOWNSHIP — One person died after three semi-trucks collided and two caught fire Wednesday around 3 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near the Botkins Road exit in Shelby County.

According to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Jaquan Simon, 27, of Huber Heights, drove a 2020 Freightliner commercial tractor-trailer when he was rear-ended by Jeffrey Sherrick, 65, of Lima, who was driving a 2015 International commercial tractor-trailer. Sherrick was then rear-ended by Iurie Chetrusea, 43, of Strongsville, who was driving a 2023 Volvo tractor-trailer.

Simon’s vehicle came to rest along the right shoulder and had no injuries. Sherrick’s truck became disabled in the roadway, and the trailer caught on fire. He was transported by ambulance to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima with minor injuries. Chetrusea’s cab and trailer also caught on fire, and he died of fatal injuries as a result of the crash.

The crash is under investigation by the Piqua Post of the State Highway Patrol. The crash shut the interstate down for hours.
