Overcoming adversity: The inspiring journey of MelMarie Skincare

FORT JENNINGS — Nestled on Road U in Fort Jennings is a space that will soon mark a new beginning for MelMarie Skincare.

As the company prepares to relocate, it’s not only the size of the building that becoming bigger, but the story of passion and resilience behind the brand.

Founded in 2013 by Tracey Lucke and her daughter, Carmella Fondriest, MelMarie Skincare initially focused on making wax melts and room misting products. When Mel began to get acne, the direction of the business changed. They began to focus on creating a natural remedy free of harsh chemicals.

“I hated letting her put all of those chemicals on her face,” Tracey said.

As a result of hard work and research by Lucke, the creation of the skincare line was created and proved to help address her daughter’s skin while also garnering attention from family members and friends. Thus, MelMarie Skincare was born.

Unfortunately, only a few short years later in 2019, Lucke was diagnosed with breast cancer. This resulted in the business becoming much more mission-driven and placing even more emphasis on avoiding harsh products. The women took the matter into their own hands.

“The things we put on our bodies are so important, as there are so many products that can cause harm. We are here to provide a safe solution,” Lucke said.

Fondriest, who initially planned a nursing career, found herself stepping up in the business after her mother’s diagnosis. At just 16 years old, she juggled the responsibility of the business, taking care of her mother, and attending school all while maintaining a social life at a young age.

After this experience, she switched her career path to business management. Her dedication, maturity, and passion have all been crucial in where the business is today.

Reflecting on the early days of the business, Lucke explained the initial vision.

“I honestly didn’t have any goals. I was just doing something I loved and tried to make it the best I could be,” she said. Her faith in God and commitment to the business have guided the company through some of its darkest days.

After quickly outgrowing their current space and successfully expanding, the excitement felt between the mother-daughter duo is palpable. The new location is hoped to open in mid-fall of 2024. A big future goal for the duo is to hopefully have production operations in the building.

“Taking steps like this gives us a glimpse into what God still has in store for us,” Lucke said.

The journey is only just beginning for this passionate, dedicated, and diligent mother-daughter duo.
