Suspect injured after breaking and entering

VAN WERT — A suspect was shot early Monday morning in the 1000 block of Pratt Street in Van Wert after breaking into a storage garage.

According to Van Wert Police Chief Douglas Weigle, at 12:54 a.m., police received a call of shots fired at the garage. The owner of the garage was inside at the time and said the suspect came within 4 feet of him before he shot him twice in self-defense. The suspect then fled the scene.

At 1:14 a.m., police got a call from the 300 block of South Cherry Street about a man who was shot but didn’t know how he got shot.

The suspect was transported by medical helicopter to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with suspected non-life-threatening injuries.

“Due to new victims rights laws, I am unable to give names and exact addresses that might identify same,” Weigle said.
