Real Wheels: A truck meant for cruising

ELIDA – Keith Miller was sold.

He didn’t feel like he needed to fly to Austin, Texas, to check out the 1957 Chevrolet panel truck that he was admiring on the internet.

The owner of the vehicle had provided Miller with a host of photographs and answered all of his questions. That was enough for the 72-year-old Miller to have it shipped to his home in Elida.

When it arrived in his driveway last March, he wasn’t disappointed.

“It was everything I hoped it would be,” Miller said as he put the vehicle on display during the Western Buckeye Region Vintage Chevrolet Club of America Show held in Lima in June.

To call it a panel truck is probably a misconception. What Miller purchased is anything but the working vehicle that someone’s grandfather owned. This 1957 Chevrolet panel truck had been transformed into a modern day cruise-mobile.

It has a striking custom orange paint job that commands your attention, and a powerful 383 cubic-inch stroker engine that provides more than enough get-up and go. Its interior features four bucket seats with center consoles and a stereo system that will put you in a cruising mood.

It only has 1,450 miles on it since it’s been refurbished.

“It’s been well taken care of,” Miller noted. As proof of that, he pointed to an air-brushed pinstripe that accentuates the truck’s paint job.

“That pin stripe was meticulously done by hand … just an amazing job,” he said. “I’ve found only a few minor imperfections. I’m looking forward to taking to it car shows, and of course, to take it cruising.”
