Koenig president: ‘We can never forget who got us here’

BOTKINS — Koenig Equipment dealerships are celebrating their 120th anniversary as an agricultural hardware store. Originating in Botkins in 1904, the business has opened 15 locations in Ohio and Indiana.

Maintaining a relationship with John Deere for four generations, they have and continue to serve agricultural farmers, homeowners, professional landscapers, and government agencies.

President and Chairman Aaron Koenig was adamant about his appreciation and gratitude for all past, present and future employees who have been a part of the dealerships. Honesty, integrity, professional management, and professional governance were all things he mentioned when speaking about the values of the business.

He was quick to mention those who came before him when talking about the past, current, and future success of the business.

“What I take away from the success that the fourth generation is experiencing would not be possible without the three generations preceding it,” he said.

“I never grew up with the expectation of getting involved in the business,” he added.

The opportunity of working full-time at the dealership came at a rather unusual time for him, as he graduated with degrees in chemistry and business but decided to work for the business. He worked part-time for the business while attending Wright State and gaining experience in a hospital.

“I found myself more energized from my day at the dealership than I did from my days at the hospital,” he said.

Working up the ladder in the company, Koening took over for his uncle after 10 years of experience.

A day in his role could see Koening working with staff or customers in Botkins or traveling to one of the 15 locations to see how things are flowing.

“I spend about a quarter to a third of the time on the road checking out various locations,” he said.

When it comes to long-term goals, Koening considered expanding the geographical “footprint” of locations for stores. He discussed the number of stores across an area isn’t what drives him, but more so how they can expand on the areas they already serve today.

“Success isn’t measured on locations. It’s measured on the footprint. We want to expand in Ohio and Indiana before we venture off to other states,” he said.

If ownership was the only goal, there would be more locations. Due to Koenig focusing on both operation and ownership, it’s easier to do if the locations are contiguous.

The company promises to continue its legacy of excellence for many years to come.
