Lima man sentenced to 12 years for assault

LIMA — A Lima man pleaded guilty and received a sentence of a minimum of 12 years in prison Monday in the Allen County Common Pleas Court on two separate cases of felonious assault, both second-degree felonies.

Both of the charges against Aaron Smith, 39, included repeat violent offender specifications.

According to court documents, on Nov. 27, 2023, Lima police were dispatched to a stabbing victim lying on a bench with a cut on the left side of the abdomen. Officers watched security video from Our Daily Bread on South Central Avenue, which showed Smith stabbing the victim and folding the knife after the stabbing.

About 90 minutes later, after stopping Smith in his vehicle, officers found the folding knife in the back seat. Smith admitted to the stabbing in an interview with detectives.

The other case related to an incident on July 21, 2023, when Smith caused serious physical harm to his girlfriend. Court documents said Smith was not arrested after that incident, but an arrest warrant was issued, and he was arrested in November after the second incident.
