Real Wheels: Special color for a special truck

LEIPSIC – It is the color of Ron Newell’s 1962 Chevrolet C10 pickup that grabs your attention and won’t let go.

You could call it burnt orange, or cherry-orange. Then again, maybe it’s more like tangerine, carrot-orange or pumpkin.

Call it whatever color you want. Just don’t expect to get any help from Newell.

“It’s a special mix we made and we don’t want anyone else using it,” the Leipsic man said.

Newell brought his C10 to the Western Buckeye Region Vintage Chevrolet Club of America Show in Lima in June. The show was hosted by the Lima Auto Mall.

Chevrolet introduced the C10 pickup in 1960, and by 1962, the automaker’s focus of making it a more comfortable ride for the driver and its passengers saw the C10 become a staple on American roadways.

Unlike other pickups, the 1962 C10 boasted a more car-like ride, thanks to upgrades to the front and rear suspension systems. The 1962 truck also offered a more roomy cab interior with a significantly lower, flatter hood that improved driver visibility. Its bench seating came with an available six-inch foam seat cushion. A dropped frame that provided a low loading height served as a reminder that the C10 was still very much a work tool.

Newell took his time restoring his C10 to its previous glory days, adding special touches along the way. For instance, to draw out the color in the truck’s bed, he lined it with Cyprus wood.

He said it is hard to believe the truck he drives today is the same one he purchased four years ago.

“I brought it home on a trailer and in boxes back then,” he said. “It was a mess.”
