Happy Together to bring Flower Power to Lima

LIMA — The music of Badfinger is still alive and is coming to Lima this weekend.

Guitarist Joey Molland said he is looking forward to doing just that when he joins the Happy Together tour, featuring other classic ’60s and ’70s artists like The Turtles and Jay and the Americans at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Veterans Memorial Civic Center, 7 Town Square.

“I went to see the show last year and I was amazed at the power of these guys,” Molland said. “The power of the show is fantastic.”

For the Liverpool native, who started out as a protege of the Beatles, Molland gets excited to perform the songs that the fans have loved since the ’60s.

“It’s great to be doing these songs for the same audience,” he said. “We appreciate them all and their reactions. I think it’s really exciting when people enjoy the show.”

Molland said it is still a lot of fun to keep the music alive.

“It keeps the songs in people’s minds,” he said. “I’ll go through my talks during the show and it’s scary because you feel like you’re going to lose your place, but it doesn’t happen.”

The powerful pop rock of Badfinger still resonates today and it is in no small part thanks to the influence of the Beatles, who signed the band to Apple Records, gave them their first hit “Come and Get It” and renamed them.

Molland, who joined the band after the recording of “Come and Get It” said he remembered them as lovely people despite being successful rockstars.

“It was fantastic,” he said.

If his words are any indication, that type of success will be on full display at the show from all of the acts.

“It surprised me, the power of the performances,” Molland said. “There is so much energy coming off the stage. I think people won’t get the real feeling unless they see the live performance.”

The most important thing is that the show leaves the audience with a good feeling.

“I want them to take away that it was an awesome performance,” Molland said. “That’s what we try to do.”
