Real Wheels: A chariot of the elite

CRIDERSVILLE – When you think Cadillac, you think luxury.

In that regard, the 1989 Cadillac Brougham restored by Hunter Certain doesn’t disappoint. It stands as a testament to an era when cars were not just a mode of transportation, but symbols of success.

The Cridersville man has owned his Cadillac for two years, buying it from a young truck driver in Shawnee Township.

“It needed work and he didn’t have the time. He saw it the other day and was happy with the restoration done to it,” said Certain, who is a member of the Crazy Car Guys, a group of local car enthusiasts.

Certain knew he had a special car when he purchased it. Cadillac had kept its commitment to elegance and luxury in the late 1980s while other automakers were downsizing. It easily seated five to six people, who found comfort in its rich upholstery. And it was the last of its kind to be powered by an old-school 5.0-liter V8 engine, known for its smooth acceleration and quiet ride.

Certain was determined to use all original parts in the restoration.

One of the hardest parts to locate was the iconic spare tire that is mounted on the back of the car.

“I paid a guy in Dayton $600 for it,” Certain said. “He had it sitting in a shed. I don’t think he realized what he had because you just don’t find them in that good of shape.”

The only issue Certain has with his Cadillac now is fitting it in his garage. The car is just over 18 feet long.

“When I park it, I’m using every inch of space … I mean, every inch.”

He’s not complaining, though.

After all, he’ll tell you, “It’s a Cadillac.”
