Speaker: Election winner shouldn’t affect markets

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — A banker focused on investments shared how inflation and the election year could affect markets Tuesday during a presentation at the Shawnee Country Club.

Deborah Boisselle, vice president of investments at Citizens National Bank’s Wealth Management Group, has worked in the financial services industry for almost 40 years.

Her presentation went in-depth on a variety of topics, such as where the stock market currently stands and where it may end in 2024, along with discussions on interest rates, and the impact of election season on the market. She touched on the election several times.

A new president will be taking office in three months, and Boisselle reassured the attendees to not focus on who wins.

“It doesn’t matter who wins the election,” Boisselle stated.

She emphasized heavily that no matter who takes office in November the stock market will be fine. According to her statistics, the S&P 500 is positive 87% of the time during an election year.

“The election, it doesn’t matter. As long as you stay invested, we can find something that will do well for you,” she said.

Inflation was another popular talking point by Boisselle.

“I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon, but it is starting to get a little better,” she shared.

To this point, the inflation rate is hovering below 3%, a major improvement from this time two years ago, when it was over 9%.

Inflation has been tough on companies and individuals around the nation, as it leads to higher interest rates. Refinancing was at a record high in 2020 and 2021, and these higher interest rates have brought refinancing way down.

“Are you refinancing today at 7-8%? Of course, you’re not,” Boisselle said. She said most of the refinancing they see has to do with credit cards, again due to higher interest rates.

Boisselle hammered it home to stay invested in the stock market and even offered advice on who to invest in.

“I like ones like P&G. You aren’t going to go without toilet paper. You are always going to want to wash your clothes,” she said.

“Stay invested no matter who wins,” she said as she concluded her presentation.
