Locos claim postseason awards

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League handed out its postseason awards on Thursday afternoon and the Locos claimed three of them, including Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Prospect of the Year.

Blake Bowen took home top honors on the list after earning the Gary Henschen Player of the Year award.

Bowen held the league’s second-best batting average at .364 with 25 runs batted in. He was the Player of the Week in week four and the starting third baseman for the Blue Team in the All-Star game.

Bowen, a native of Wooster, Ohio, will head to the University of Akron next season after transferring in from the University of Kentucky.

Matteo Pare, the Locos ace out of Pensacola State College, was named the Lou Laslo Pitcher of the Year after he worked to a record of 3-1 this season over seven starts. Pare had the league’s best earned run average at 1.90 and he struck out 19 batters in 33 innings.

The Ron Miller Top Player Prospect Award went to Brooks Wright, who’s set to be an incoming freshman at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. He is the third Loco to make his collegiate debut in the GLSCL and be named to the All-Star team.

Wright’s final regular season stats included a .278 batting average with 10 runs batted in in 33 games.

The Locos finished the regular season with a record of 21-15. They’re set for a first-round series against Hamilton this weekend.

The Joes, who finished the summer with a league-best record of 26-9, claimed the remaining awards after Tyler Thamann was named the Joe Carbone GLSCL Manager of the Year and Kyle Kesel was the Tony Lucadella Top Pitcher Prospect.
