The Lima News wins 12 awards in 2023 contest

COLUMBUS — The Lima News won 12 awards, including three first-place awards, at the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors awards announced Sunday at an event in Columbus.

The newspaper tied for third place in general excellence in Division IV, a category for mid-sized newspapers across the state that included newspapers in Canton, Cleveland, Elyria, Findlay and Warren.

“It’s nice to see all areas of our newsroom recognized for the hard work they put in during 2023,” said David Trinko, editor of The Lima News. “Our real reward is the trust the region gives us, but it’s always nice to be recognized for your efforts.”

Photographer Richard Parrish won four awards, including best photographer. He also won first place for sports photo, as well as second and third places for best news photos.

Trinko won four awards, including first place for best graphic artist. He took second-place honors for best illustration or informational graphic and for best public service for the 30th annual public salary review. He also won third for best spot news coverage, about the sale of the Lima Mall to New York investors.

Jacob Espinosa won second place for best video, for coverage on restoring local historic theaters.

Mackenzi Klemann took second place for best investigative reporting for coverage of what went wrong at Allen County Children Services following a sexual assault investigation.

Sarah Shrader won third place for best columnist for her “Real Life Mama” column.

The Lima News’ sports staff earned third place for best sports special section for its 2023 high school football preview section.

In all, there were 1,056 entries from 39 newspapers in the five divisions of the contest.

At the ceremony, the Dayton Daily News won the First Amendment award for fighting to unseal a sexual assault case pending against a former assistant prosecutor.

Duane Pohlman joined the Ohio APME hall of fame. The TV broadcaster’s resume includes time at WCMH in Columbus, WEWS in Cleveland and WKRC in Cincinnati.
