Responders clean up small nitric acid spill in Shawnee Township

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — A small nitric acid spill Friday morning in Shawnee Township was quickly neutralized, according to the Shawnee Township Fire Department.

The incident involved a tanker truck carrying the corrosive acid. At 10:17 a.m., the fire department was notified of two small pools of acid on the roadway, one on Adgate Road and the other on Buckeye Road, with the total amount of acid in both spills totaling less than one gallon. According to the fire department, the spills likely took place when the truck was starting and stopping on the road.

Both the fire department and the Allen County EMA responded to both spills, applying soda ash to neutralize the acid, allowing both spills to be swept up and removed from the road. While nitric acid is capable of melting pavement, first responders were able to arrive in time to prevent any noticeable damage, according to the fire department.

Because both spills remained on the pavement, there was no environmental impact, the fire department said. No injuries were reported.
