Organization to honor fallen Bluffton police officer with traveling memorial

BLUFFTON — Beyond the Call of Duty, an organization that honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, will bring their traveling memorial to Bluffton as part of its End of Watch Ride to Remember on Saturday, July 13 in honor of Bluffton Police Officer Dominic Francis.

The memorial will arrive at Bluffton Dairy Freeze, 595 S. Main St., Bluffton, around 3 p.m. and will leave around 4:30 p.m. with a police escort through downtown.

According to a press release from the Bluffton Police Department, the organization from Spokane Valley, Washington, travels across the country with the rolling memorial every other summer to pay tribute to all fallen officers of the previous two years along with their families and departments. The purpose of the organization is not only to make sure fallen officers are remembered but also to support safety and training so there are fewer fallen officers.

“I wanted to bridge this gap that we have and give back to the departments and let the surviving officers and their families know that their loss has not been forgotten,” said Beyond the Call of Duty Founder and former Deputy Jagrut Shah on why he started the organization.

The End of Watch Ride to Remember will honor 259 fallen officers from 2022 and 2023 and will travel 22,500 miles in 73 days.

Francis was killed in the line of duty on March 31, 2022, when he was struck by a vehicle involved in a multi-county chase.
