Mid-day turnaround puts Beachy in city golf quarterfinals

HARROD — Braden Beachy wasn’t happy with his score in the championship flight qualifying round in the Lima City Men’s Golf Championship at Colonial Golfers Club on Thursday morning, but that was about to change.

After shooting an 86 in the qualifying round, the highest score of any of the 31 golfers who advanced to match play in the championship flight, Beachy was a 1-up winner over the No. 2 seed, Hunter Jolliff, in the afternoon round.

“I did not play very well for qualifying. That’s for sure. I had a couple of bad breaks and I wasn’t hitting the ball very well. But I turned it around,” Beachy said.

“This morning was not good. I really came around — started hitting greens, made a couple of putts, and it’s amazing what you can do when you hit a fairway off the tee. I haven’t shot that bad probably since I was 16 years old. That was the highest round I’ve had in a long time, so I was not feeling terribly confident when I drew Hunter’s name.”

Beachy said he didn’t have an explanation for how he was able to produce two such dissimilar rounds back to back.

“That’s a hard question. That’s golf. You’ve got to grind it out,” he said.

Kayne Richardson and Jolliff shot even par rounds of 72. With an odd number of golfers in the championship flight, Richardson claimed medalist honors in a scorecard playoff and got a bye in the first round of match play.

He birdied three of his final holes to get to the top of the qualifying round. “That was nice. It was kind of good momentum going into tomorrow,” he said, looking ahead to the second round of championship flight match play at Hidden Creek Golf Club. “I was pretty happy overall. I hit the ball good enough.”

Other winners in the championship flight’s match play round were: James Shipper, Brian Stevenson, Josh Hollar, Zach Miller, Justin Akers, Alex Odenweller, John Sizemore, Zach Stechschulte, Joe Hobensack, Myron Meas, Guillermo Menacho, Ian Friesner, Logan Dray and Kyle Ball.

All flights of the tournament will play at Hidden Creek on Friday.
