Train strikes truck that went around gate

MOUNT VICTORY — A train struck a semi-truck that tried to go around the crossbucks Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release fom Hardin County Sheriff Keith Everhart.

Traffic is being diverted from state Route 31 until the wreckage can be investigated and cleared.

At approximately noon Wednesday, the semi-truck and trailer driven by Richard Lavander, of Ontario, Canada, attempted to go around the crossbuck that was down warning of a nearby train at the crossing with state Route 31/Main Street in Mount Victory.

As the truck went around, an eastbound CSX train struck the truck, separating the truck from its trailer. The impact pushed the truck approximately a quarter mile east of its original impact.

Lavander was transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton with minor injuries. He was cited for disobeying a railroad crossing device.

Two drivers of the train were uninjured in the incident. Assisting the sheriff’s office at the scene were Mount Victory Fire/EMS, CSX Railroad and Minich’s Towing.
