Soldiers of Honor hold block party

LIMA — The Soldiers of Honor Boxing Boot Camp hosted its fourth annual Safe Summer Block Party. Children of all ages joined to celebrate the summer season.

“The goal of the program is to get the kids in a positive environment and build a good foundation in a positive way,” parent-volunteer Kelly Wilson said. “We want their mental health right and create a healthy mindset. We also want to let the kids know we are here for them in any way possible.”

Wilson said the boxing program not only helps children physically but mentally as well. Wilson’s connection with the program came after her son joined, and the family continues to support the organization.

“My son just graduated from high school and was involved for about a year and a half,” Wilson said. “It had an amazing impact on him. I think a lot of kids go through difficult times. When we first started, the environment and positivity were great. It was great having the coaches help mentor him.”

The fitness center not only provides classes for children but also personal coaching and more.

“We are here Tuesdays and Thursdays from about 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.,” Wilson said. “If you are not sure, you could show up and see what it is all about. People can come in and give it a shot. I bet by the end you are going to forget what you were worried about when you first came in.”

The fitness center is located at 117 S. Union St., Lima.
