Two people, dog rescued from Ottawa house fire

OTTAWA — No injuries were sustained but heavy damage occurred after a house fire at 7811 Township Road 15C, Ottawa, on May 23 at around 5:40 p.m.

Miller City Fire, Glandorf Fire, Kalida Fire, Continental Fire, Columbus Grove EMS and the Putnam County Office of Public Safety responded to the scene. Passersby stopped and helped rescue Janet Lehman and her granddaughter from the house. The family dog was also rescued and Kalida Fire used an oxygen mask to revive the dog.

“I’m a firm believer that they saved those two lives in that house,” Miller City Fire Chief Ryan Barlage said about the passersby.

Barlage said half the house had fire damage and the other half had smoke damage. The fire appeared to originate along the living room wall. He said this is a good reminder to talk to kids about where to go and what to do in case of a fire, even at their grandparents’ house, and make sure smoke detectors are working.
