Lima celebrates Memorial Day with parade, flyover

LIMA — The Stars and Stripes were flying in Lima Monday as residents took time to celebrate the nation and honor those who died protecting it while serving in the Armed Forces.

The day started with a military flyover that had the hundreds lining Main Street in Lima in awe Monday morning.

The city’s Memorial Day Parade brought out veterans, local businesses and organizations, and residents gathering to remember those who sacrificed their lives for the country.

“We just wanted to be a part of a nice community event,” Lima resident Brenda Keller said. “Also we think it’s really important to honor those who have served our country, especially those who sacrificed greatly for our freedom.”

Keller’s husband Tom had high praise for this year’s edition of the parade.

“It was the best one ever,” he said. “It was well-represented by all the forces and everyone got to show their advertisements for their companies.”

Organizer with Friends of Lima Adena Poling said it was an honor to take on the duties her father Lance Corporal Mark Moore used to carry out, with her husband Aaron.

“It is my joy and honor to continue his legacy,” she said. “And I hope that I make him proud.”

Poling said the flyover did not go off flawlessly, but that it was a wonderful experience for all involved.

“The VFW (wreath-laying) ceremony was nostalgic and beautiful,” she said. “The speaker was very well-spoken and a joy to listen to.”

Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith walked in the parade and felt similar.

“I was excited to see members of the community come out and honor those who have fallen for our freedom,” she said.

Keller said she hoped the day served as a reminder to not take freedom for granted and showed future generations the importance of the military.

“I think we really need to think about the sacrifices that our military make for us every day,” she said. “I think we need to remember that and to pray for those serving and their families. And we should be grateful for what a great country we have.”
