Bomb squad responds to incident in Ottawa

OTTAWA — A man is in custody after an incident Sunday that led to the closure of a portion of state Route 65.

According to a release from the Ottawa Police Department, officers responded to a report of a suspicious male at approximately 11:47 a.m. Sunday to state Route 65 at West Third Street in Ottawa. Upon arrival, officers located the individual, whose identity was not included in the release. While speaking with him, officers were “alerted by suspicious behavior and alarming statements made about the contents of the vehicle,” the report said.

While the release did not elaborate on the details of the conversation, the response included a request for assistance from the North West Ohio Bomb Squad attached to the Toledo Police Department. The bomb squad remained at the scene for several hours. The roadway was finally reopened at 5:43 p.m., according to a Facebook post by the Putnam County Office of Public Safety.

The individual was taken into custody, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. The incident remains under investigation.
