Council remembers veterans, discusses new pool

LIMA — In honor of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, Executive Director of Allen County Veterans Service Commission Tamara Wilson spoke to Lima City Council on Monday about the many services that are available to veterans in Allen County.

“With Veterans Day coming up, I thought it was a great time to talk about what we do,” Wilson said. “We serve veterans in Allen County. What is good about being here is I know there are veterans in each ward. Please direct them to our office because we can help them.”

According to the Allen County Veterans Service Commission website, the agency assists veterans and their families with individual concerns.

“We understand their needs as we are veterans too,” according to the information on the website.

All services provided by the commission are free of charge.

The council also placed an ordinance for Mayor Sharetta Smith to enter into a contract with Charles Contracting LLC on a second reading. According to the communications letter, if approved the company will construct the mulitiple-use pool for the Lima Aquatic Center.

The letter also states the pool will aid in enhancing the well-being of the community. The contract is set to cost $9,235,863. The funding is reportedly available through the Stormwater, Better Together and an Ohio Department of National Resource grant. The contractors would potentially begin developing the pool in 2023 and it is scheduled to be complete in 2025.

The council approved a resolution to honor former 4th Ward councilman Thomas Tebben, who died Aug. 19. According to the resolution, Tebben sat on city council for 15 years.

“When I finally decided I was going to run for city council, I talked to my wife first, then I called Tom,” Second Ward Council Member Tony Wilkerson said. “I could feel his smile through the phone. He told me,’You got this,’ and was always reassuring.”
