Concerts in the Park gearing up for another summer of fun and music

LIMA — The Council for the Arts of Greater Lima is gearing up for the return of a summer tradition this weekend.

Council Director Bart Mills said that kicking off Concerts in the Park with Stedic Music, a local reggae/soca fusion band, is the perfect way to start the season at Faurot Park.

“They play a little bit of soca, reggae and some R&B, so they’re a popular band and they’ve been around town for quite a while and they’re a good way to start off the season,” Mills said. “We try to bring a diversity of music in so everything from jazz and rock to bluegrass and country. It’s a free concert right there in the park pavilion and you can bring your own lawn chair to enjoy the concert for 90 minutes starting at 7 p.m.”

The Happy Daz Concerts in the Park have been going on every Sunday for 57 years, according to Mills, and he said it never gets old to celebrate the coming of summer with them.

“It’s become a tradition for a lot of people,” he said. “The fact that we can provide something free is great because it gives everybody a chance to participate and enjoy something. It gives us a chance to highlight some of our local musicians and an opportunity for people to get a buffet-style offering of all of the different types of music we have here. It’s also a nice way to show off one of the jewels of the city, which is Faurot Park.”

Mills added that people in Lima should be excited about everything there is to experience in the city this summer.

“I think we’ve got a broad offering in Lima,” he said. “We always have a really steady schedule of things going on every weekend, during the week all throughout the summer so people really don’t have any excuse to stay home if they don’t want to. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the weather.”

Among the other performers set to take the stage at the Faurot Park Pavilion every Sunday this summer through Aug. 13, excluding July 2 are Waiting on Waves, Beer Barrel Boys, Prudence, Night Jazz, Palmer and Brandon Monford.

According to the council, more than 5,000 residents attend the concert series annually.
