Spartan Ride open to students

LIMA — Lima schools debuted the Spartan Ride for the second year.

It’s an old school bus transformed into a resource center for students throughout the summer. The bus opened its doors Wednesday morning and will continue to provide books to children in the area. The bus plans to make stops throughout the city to reach children hoping to continue to learn.

“The Spartan Ride came at the start of school last year,” said Sara Julien, Lima schools’ parent liason. “It has gone to all the schools after school. This year we are hitting all the parks and following the food truck so students get meals and books. We’re looking for other community spots too, so the parks, the splash pads where the kids are going to meet.”

Julien said students of all ages are welcome to make a stop at the bus and pick books of their choosing.

“They take them home, they read them and then they get to keep them,” Julien said. “It’s just building new libraries inside the house. We have other resources as well. Right now we have art kits and magnifying glasses and several things for students to keep on learning.”

The hope of giving away books and resources is to keep children interested in learning.

“With continuing it (reading) throughout the summer,” Julien said. “They’re just going to hold on to that learning and the growth, and that way they start the school year not so far behind — I don’t care what school you’re in.”

Community members interested in donating books are welcome to drop off books at any of the Lima school locations.
