Lima hopes to utilize new education program

LIMA — The City of Lima sent a communications letter to council members focusing on education for children. The city hopes to utilize a program known as the Ohio Afterschool Child Enrichment Educational Savings Account.

According to the letter, parents can apply for grant funding of $1,000 to use for children to purchase materials or opportunities for education. Local organizations are able to participate in the program by becoming one of the city’s Qualified Educational Service Providers.

Lima Council met Monday evening to move this communication forward for further discussion and approve several other ordinances.

Mayor Sharetta Smith weighed in on the program in a recent press release.

“Summer and afterschool activities are an important asset to continue the enhancement of our youth education efforts,” said Smith in the release. “These programs provide a safe space where children can engage in hands-on learning and keeping their minds and bodies active. Though we recognize the importance of these summer and afterschool programs, we also realize that they can sometimes place a financial burden on families. By becoming an approved service provider through the Ohio ACE Program, we are hoping to remove some of those financial barriers and open greater access to these valuable programs.”

Council also approved an ordinance to purchase a new ambulance for the Lima Fire Department and testing kits for lead and copper water contamination.

In addition, council approved a resolution honoring the late Alberta Lee. Fourth Ward Council Member Peggy Ehora weighed in.

“The word I would use to describe her is trailblazer,” said Ehora. “She is the gold-standard for a whole lot of women in this community. I had an opportunity to have a lot of conversations with her. What I appreciate the most is that she was supportive of everyone, especially women and women in public office. I just appreciate her and I appreciate everything she did for this community.”
