Troy man gets probation for robbery

LIMA — A young Troy man was sentenced to three years on community control for robbery on Monday.

Darquvies Young, 18, was sentenced on a third-degree felony robbery charge after plea negotiations in February. Public Defender Kenneth Sturgill said the case arose from Young and the victim being interested in the same girl, and Young losing his temper.

But Sturgill said the victim’s original story was “embellished.” He said Young did not have or use a gun, and instead took the victim’s phone and struck him across the face with it before leaving and discarding it.

The indictment and police report had said that Young had a gun that he brandished at the victim.

Young told Allen County Common Pleas Court Judge Jeffrey Reed that he felt bad for his actions, which came from him being unable to control his anger.

“I had got in my feelings,” Young said. “I let my emotions take over me.”

Sturgill said while out on bond for the case, Young followed all conditions and continued working toward graduating from high school on time. He said the victim only suffered a minor cut on his face.

Young told Reed that he plans to better his life, and that after high school, he wants to get into welding.

Reed ordered Young to obtain his diploma and perform 40 hours of community control by July 4. He said he must complete anger management counseling and have no contact with the victim.
