Changes made to May primary election: Judge candidate off the ballot

ALLEN COUNTY — Several petitions for the primary election were submitted before the deadline in Allen County. Unfortunately, not every petition was approved. Lima Municipal Court Judge candidate Rick Eddy was denied candidacy for the election in May. The City of Lima prosecutor filed petitions that did not meet the requirements of the board.

According to Board Director Kathy Meyer, Eddy placed the wrong date on the petition, disqualifying his signatures. A Democratic candidate did not file for the position. At this time, Republican candidate John Payne will run unopposed in the November election for Lima Municipal Court Judge.

Eddy said in a Facebook post he is no longer a candidate for the position but he is grateful for the outpouring of support he received during his campaign.

The Allen County Board of elections met Monday afternoon to discuss another change for the primary ballot.

A new tax levy was set to be placed on the ballot to help fund the Elida Police Department. On Feb. 3, Dave Metzger, the village administrator, said the levy would be renewable for five years. The 4.5 mil would bring in approximately $200,000 per year in additional revenue.

Following a review by the secretary of state, the ballot language was not approved.

“The village of Elida had submitted ballot language for a tax levy to add more funding to their police department,” said board member Keith Cheney. “That ballot language is then sent to the secretary of state’s office for review. It was returned to Allen County with the specific notation that we should talk with our county prosecutor because the ballot language as submitted was too vague.”

Cheney said the board has spoken with the attorney for the village of Elida, who will meet with the county prosecutor Monday evening. The Allen County Board of elections will make an official decision on what to place on the ballot Tuesday morning.
