Roses and Thorns

The roses are red and the thorns are quite thorny this week in our garden:

Rose: To the family of Lima icon Jim Lynch, the former Notre Dame and Kansas City Chiefs football player who died last week. Your loss is our loss, as Lynch was a good representative of this area and his alma matter, Lima Central Catholic.

Rose: To the downtown Lima roundabout and its designers. Thus far, traffic is flowing much more smoothly around it than the former two-lane series of stops and starts that was there. They took an awkward square in the middle of the city and turned it into something functional.

Rose: To the City of Lima, Lima schools and the Lima Family YMCA, for putting together an interesting and well-designed plan to bring a public swimming pool back to Lima, near the high school. It would benefit generations of Lima residents with a safe and fun way to beat the heat, while also finding a way to use the structure year-round with a retractable roof.

Thorn: To planners with Schoonover Lake in Lima, who didn’t realize how quickly weeds would overtake the lake after making infrastructure improvements. Now it will be four or five years before people can begin fishing the lake again.

Thorn: To Jeremy Calhoun, of Lima, who struck a toddler with his car and killed 1-year-old Niomi Ward in the 200 block of Harrison Avenue around 8 p.m. Monday night. Authorities are looking for more information and are considering charges.
