Roses and Thorns

It certainly seems like the thorns are more noticeable in the rose garden in the heat of summer, but there are roses if you look for them.

Rose: To fire crews for their rapid response to the fire of a historic building on Spring Street on Friday morning. While the loss of the Callahan Building is sad for Lima’s history, the crews kept it from spreading to nearby structures.

Thorn: To Miles Black, of Ottawa, who pleaded guilty to making false alarms in the so-called “wrong Ottawa” case. He thought he was calling in a bomb threat to the Ottawa, Canada, police department in the midst of the mask protests there, but he ended up wasting the time of the Putnam County village and the sheriff’s office there. Wasting the time of law enforcement is never a good idea, as it takes away from people who may have a real emergency.

Rose: To Marilynn Rupert, of Lima, whose suggestion for a classic Pluggers cartoon will appear again on Wednesday with the caption, “Pluggers don’t talk to themselves. They just do their thinking out loud.” It’s one of the cartoonist’s favorites and appears as a “summer classic” while he’s on vacation.

Thorn: To Cole Fischbach, a former New Knoxville basketball coach, who was sentenced to six months in jail for disseminating material harmful to a juvenile. While he was just convicted of misdemeanors, Judge Frederick Pepple wasn’t appreciative of his attitude during sentencing, saying, “I don’t sense in you any remorse because you minimize what you did.”
