Guardians select power-hitting infielder, Reds take pitcher

The Cleveland Guardians selected Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana with the No. 1 pick in Sunday night’s Major League Baseball amateur draft and the Cincinnati Reds, picking in the No. 2 spot, chose Wake Forest pitcher Chase Burns.

Bazzana, regarded as the top player available in the draft in most rankings, hit .407 and had 28 home runs this season for Oregon State.

He grew up in Sydney, Australia. This is the first time a second baseman has been the No. 1 draft pick. It also is the first time the Guardians have had the No. 1 pick in the draft, which began in 1965.

Burns, from Hendersonville, Tenn., had a 10-1 record and struck out 191 batters while allowing only 62 hits in 100 innings this season for Wake Forest.

He played his first two seasons of college baseball at the University of Tennessee, where he was a starting pitcher as a freshman before being moved to the Volunteers’ bullpen during his sophomore season. He entered the transfer portal in 2023 and went back to being a starter after transferring to Wake Forest.
