GLSCL roundup: Locos sweep doubleheader from Michigan

Lima Locos 10, Michigan Monarchs 7

The Locos drew 12 walks and leaned some strong relief pitching to beat Michigan in a makeup game from Wednesday night.

After jumping out to a five-run lead in the first inning, Lima got themselves into a shootout that saw Michigan bring the score all the way back to 7-6 in the third.

The Monarchs chased starter Cody Soliday (Mercer University) after three innings in favor of Drew Kirby (Louisiana Lafayette University), and Kirby calmed things down, holding Michigan hitless in the last four innings.

Brice Estep (Coastal Carolina University) and Kaden Brown (Kennesaw State University) each drove in a run in the sixth to give Kirby some insurance.

Estep recorded two RBI in the win and Blake Bowen (University of Akron) went 2 for 3, scoring two runs.

Austin Fisher (Oakland University) was the losing pitcher after he allowed three earned runs in one inning of work.

Reginald Sharpe (Michigan State University) and Alex Cheeseman (University of Alabama Birmingham) both collected two RBI for the Monarchs.

Lima Locos 3, Michigan Monarchs 1

In the second half of their doubleheader, Lima and Michigan played a much lower-scoring game and the Locos did just enough to complete the sweep.

A two-run third inning from the Locos was all that was needed to back up the combined efforts of Thomas Howard (University of Louisville) and Griffin Howe (St. Johns River State College) on the mound.

The two arms combined to hold Michigan to one earned run on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Landon Tate (Kennesaw State University) launched an RBI double in the third inning and Blake Bowen (University of Akron) tacked on an insurance run with his second homer of the summer in the sixth.

Sam Bassett-Kennedy (Michigan State University) was the losing pitcher after letting one earned run cross the plate in five innings.

Derek Ruiz (Lander University) recorded two hits and drove in a run for the Monarchs.

After sweeping the doubleheader, Lima improves to 10-8 and Michigan falls to 8-10.

South Ohio Copperheads 5, Xenia Scouts 0

Both teams recorded five hits but South Ohio manufactured five runs in a makeup game from Wednesday night.

Case Sullivan (Valparaiso University) had a two-run single in the third inning. He finished the game 2 for 3 with a pair of runs batted in. Trenton Neuer (Ohio University) also recorded two hits for the Copperheads.

Mike DiForte (Saint Peters University) tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout with four strikeouts to get the win.

Adam Wade (Alvin Community College) was tabbed with the loss after he yielded two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Noah Ruiz (Biola University) had two of Xeina’s five hits.

South Ohio Copperheads 8, Xenia Scouts 4

South Ohio held off a late charge in the seventh inning to complete the doubleheader sweep over Xenia.

The Copperheads put together a five-run second inning to take control of the game on an RBI double from Gavyn Smith (University of Findlay), a groundout that scored Pauly Mancino (Ohio University) and an error on a single from Max Orozco (Oakland City University) that plated three runners.

Orozco had two of South Ohio’s five hits and Case Sullivan (Valparaiso University) drove in two runs.

Matthew Blanchard (Seton Hill University) went the distance to pick up the win. He limited the damage to four earned runs on seven hits.

Xenia starter Christopher McClean (Biola University) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on four hits in three innings.

Noah Ruiz (Biola University) had three hits and Troy Lynch (University of Minnesota Duluth) drove in three of the Scouts’ four runs.

South Ohio is now 8-10, while Xenia falls to 10-11.

Hamilton Joes 11, Grand Lake Mariners 5

Hamilton scored seven runs in the eighth inning to erase Grand Lake’s 5-4 lead and take two out of three from the Mariners.

The Joes’ big eighth-inning rally was the result of a two-run double from Jamie Palmese (East Tennessee State University), an RBI single from Braxton Baird (Milligan College) and a two-run triple from Ryan Novak (Miami University).

Baird and Novak each had two hits, while Palmese and Paul Osting (Lincoln Trail College) joined Novak in driving home two runs.

Andrew Kirila (Walsh University) was the loser after he failed to record an out and allowed five earned runs on two hits.

Two-hit games were recorded by Stefan DiCorrado (Dartmouth College), Cameron Bryant (transfer portal) and Ethyn Barnitz (West Virginia State University).

Hamilton’s record now improves to 13-5 and Grand Lake drops to 5-13.
