Roundup: Ohio Northern wins OAC women’s basketball tourney

ADA — The Ohio Northern women’s basketball team defeated Marietta 60-45 to win the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

“This is great for our kids,” ONU head coach Mark Huelsman said in a news release. “They work really hard and are really unselfish and have played together well all year. I’m glad they’re getting rewarded at the end of the year for all their hard work.”

As the tournament champion, ONU (23-4) receives the OAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced during a selection show at 2:30 p.m. Monday on NCAA.com.

Brynn Serbin was named OAC Tournament MVP after tallying a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to go with seven assists and two steals in Saturday’s game.

Fort Jennings graduate Kristen Luersman added her ninth double-double of the season, contributing 12 points and 14 rebounds.

PAULDING — Claire Foust had 17 points and Anne Oliver scored 13 for Bath, which finished its season at 20-5.

WAPAKONETA — Avae Unrast 12 points and Chloe Ronnebaum scored 10 for the Flyers (22-4), who will play Tri-Village, a 71-29 winner against Fayetteville-Perry, at 6 p.m. Thursday at Butler in Vandala. Kaycie Albers had 13 points and Lilly Barhorst scored eight for the Wildcats (14-11).

Crestview 46, Ayersville 36

DEFIANCE — The Knights (21-4) advanced to play Toledo Christian, a 48-46 winner against Lakota at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Elida.

Clay Sectional

Lima Senior’s Sir Horrison (144 pounds) and Jameson Wicker (175) finished fourth in their divisions. Teammate Javion Anderson was sixth at 285 pounds. The top four in each weight class gained a district berth. Lima Senior (38 points) was 13th behind team champ Perrysburg (339).

Division II

Defiance Sectional

Wapakoneta (178.5), Celina (139) and St. Marys (138) finished third through fifth respectively behind team champ Wauseon (288.5)

St. Marys’ Tate Hisey (113), Wapakoneta’s Antwain Adams (138) and Wyatt Buell (150) and Celina’s Tyler Carlin (175) each won their weight classes.

Clyde sectional

Kenton’s Anthony Hunt (150 pounds) earned a spot at districts with a third place. Gavin Manns (165) and Matthew Handell (215) each finished fifth and Karson Davis (126) and Evan Elliott (157) were each sixth for the Wildcats.

Kenton (49 points) finished 11th behind team champion Ontario (191). The top four finishers in each weight division earned a spot at the Clyde district.

Division III

Van Buren sectional

Bluffton (78) finished fifth and Pandora-Gilboa (no points) 13th behind team champ Liberty-Benton (226.5).

Micah Rehm (132) and Jett Blackburn (138) each were second, Zvyen Smith (106) was third, Jaiden Smith (126) and

Isaiah Mikesell (165) were each fourth and Wyatt Knauss (113) was fifth individually for Bluffton with the top four finishers in each weight class advancing to districts.
