MASON — Ada’s Zachary Beaschler reached the Division II semifinals at Friday’s boys state tennis tournament at Lindner Family Tennis Center.
Beaschler opened with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory against Dayton Miami Valley School’s Niyanth Reddy. Columbus Wellington School’s Milan Gonela then retired with Beaschler leading 6-1, 1-0 in the quarterfinals. Beaschler will play Cincinnati Indian Hill’s Andrew Pregel in a semifinal today.
In doubles, Shawnee’s Michael Rutter and Isaac Hanover defeated Circleville Logan Elm’s Avery Clouse and Jonathan Reisinger 6-4, 6-3 before falling 6-1, 6-4 to Gates Mills Hawken’s Stephanie Shulman and Sauren Khosla in the quarterfinals.

Division I
AMHERST — The Lima Senior girls finished third in the team standings with 51 points behind Brunswick (93) and Strongsville (59).
The Spartans’ Suerethia Henderson won the 100 and 200 and joined Deji’ona Shurelds Simpson, Corion McDonald-Gordon and Elyse Kelley in finishing second in the 800 relay. Teammate Briana Wright won the discus and was third in the shot put. Shawnee’s Faith Baxter was second in the 400 and was part of the fourth-place 1,600 relay team with Lauren Baxter, Alaina Behnke and Liana Rodriguez.
In the boys competition, Shawnee’s Christian Ford won the 200 and was third in the 100. Celina’s Tyler Ross was fourth in the discus.
The first four individual or relay teams in each running event in the regionals qualifies for state along the two next fastest times in each event from around the state. The top four in each field event advance.
Division III
TIFFIN — The Kalida boys finished fourth in the team standings with 38 points behind Liberty-Benton (58), 2. Ashland Crestview (57) and Colonel Crawford (44).
The Kalida 800 relay team of Trevor Vorst, Grant Laudick, Carter Moore and Josh Verhoff finished first. Verhoff was first in the 200 and third in the 100. Laudick was second in the 400.
Continental’s Eli Troyer was second in the high jump.
In the girls competition, Kalida finished sixth as a team with 36 points. Liberty-Benton was the team champ with 62 points.
Upper Scioto Valley’s Megan Carey (100 hurdles), Pandora-Gilboa’s Alaina Basinger (100) and Leipsic’s Grace Rigel (shot put) won events. Carey was also fourth in the high jump.
Kalida’s Taylor Lucke was second in the 1,600. Lucke was also fourth in the 3,200 and teammate Hannah Berheide was third in the 200. Continental’s Katie Keller and USV’s Megan Carey were second and third respectively in the 300 hurdles.
Spencerville wins
Bachman Award
Spencerville won the Northwest Conference 2017-18 Don Bachman Award of Excellence. This is the first time Spencerville has accomplished this feat since the establishment of the award in 2005. This award recognizes the school in the conference that exhibits the highest level of consistent excellence in conference-sponsored sports and scholastic bowl competition each school year.
The Bearcats compiled a total of 76.5 points with Crestview (75.0) and Bluffton (72.0) finishing second and third respectively. Points are awarded and accumulated each year based on conference standings in all sports and the NWC scholastic bowl competition.
The award was started during the 2005-06 school year to honor longtime Northwest Conference commissioner/secretary, Don Bachman, who served in that position for more than 30 years before passing away in 2005.

McGee to Lourdes
LIMA — Lima Senior’S Marcus McGee has signed a letter of intent to compete at Lourdes University.
Lourdes is a NAIA school and member of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC). McGee was a district qualifier and a team captain.
Hampshire Classic
at Waynefield
WAYNESFIELD — The name Bob Hampshire isn’t a name that comes without years of stories and race memories. So, following an illustrious career, Hampshire, former driver and now Hall of Fame car owner and engine builder, has found his name as the headline for what is set to be an all star-studded Sunday night at Waynesfield Raceway Park for the Bob Hampshire Classic.
Local promoter Shane Helms created this event to honor Hampshire for his years of dedication and commitment to the sport of racing. The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will be making their 2018 debut. In addition to the 410 winged sprint cars, the K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders will be joining the card for their first of three events at Waynesfield this season. The event will serve as a tune-up for the June 17 visit during the Ohio Sprint Speedweek event featuring both divisions of sprint car racing on one night.
The top five drivers contending for points in the All Star points battle are all within 50 points or less of the current leader Aaron Reutzel. NASCAR Xfinity driver and two-time Chili Bowl champion Christopher Bell has committed to racing this event. Bell has also committed to pulling double duty with the NRA 360’s.
As for the K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders, the 360 sprint cars will be competing this weekend for extra money with $3,000 going to the winner Sunday night. Additionally, they competed Friday at Limaland Motorsports Park and are scheduled to run tonight at Fremont Speedway. Any driver that can win all three feature events will take home an extra bonus of $2,000. A points system has been created for these three events. Those who finish in the top five of the points have a chance to win multiple extra bonuses.
Admittance into this Sunday’s Memorial Day weekend race will be $22 for adults, $11 for those ages 11-15 and everyone under the age of 10 will be admitted for free. Pit access is availablefor $35. Pit gates will open at 4 p.m., general admission at 5 p.m., with hot laps beginning at 6 p.m., and racing set to begin at 7 p.m.

Freed-Hardeman 6, UNOH 1
LEWISTON, Idaho — The University of Northwestern Ohio dropped its opener in the Avista-NAIA World Series.
UNOH (42-19) faces the St. Thomas/Lewis-Clark State loser in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m today.
NAIA Championship
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Due to rain and lightning, the final round at the par 72 PGA National Championship Course was canceled.
“We were pulled on and off the course a few times before they decided to cancel,” UNOH head coach Dawn West said. “We did a good job working around the delays, however, and had climbed up a couple of spots in the team rankings before the round was called off. It was a tough way to end our season and to end the careers of our seniors, Faithe Carr and Lauren Crooks.”
Caitriona Griffin was selected to the All-Tournament Team, finishing tied for 13th overall with a three-round score of 232. As a result of being named to the All-Tournament Team, Griffin automatically qualifies for the 2019 national tournament.
“Caitriona had a great week for us,” West said. “She played well, even through some tough conditions. I couldn’t be more proud of her and the rest of the team for their effort.”
Off the course, the UNOH team was nominated for an individual Champions of Character Award.
“We had a great experience this week and we represented ourselves and the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference well on and off the course,” West said. “We are somewhat disappointed with where we finished, but I am proud of the heart and desire we showed out there.”
Also competing for the Racers were Devaki Anatha Ganesh (235, tied for 22nd), Natalia Quintero (249, tied for 69th), Carr (256, tied for 81st) and Lauren Crooks (262, 86th). UNOH finished 13th in the team standings with a 970. Savannah College of Art and Design won the team title (909).
