College roundup: Ohio Northern reaches softball regional final

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Ohio Northern softball team scored four times in the third inning Saturday on its way to defeating No. 19-ranked St. Mary’s (Ind.) 5-0 in Game 3 of the NCAA III Softball Notre Dame, Indiana, Regional at the Purcell Athletic Fields.

The Polar Bears (32-9 overall) advanced to the finals and will play for the Regional title against Case Western Reserve, a 6-2 winner against St. Mary’s, beginning at noon today. Northern needs one more victory to win the double-elimination tournament.

“We came out ready to play right from the start,” ONU head coach Jackie Price said. “This was a very big win for our program. We were solid in all three phases. I really like were we are as a team right now.”

Kirsten Lightel threw a three-hitter, striking our four and improving to 20-3 on the season.

Lightel now has 66 career wins, tying the school record set by Cortney Cash from 2007-10.

Hailee Loughman had two hits and Alicia Swierz had a hit and an RBI for the Polar Bears.

Keeler Invitational

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Ohio Northern competed in the annual Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central (Ill.) College in Naperville this weekend.

No teams score were kept in the meet.

On the second day of the meet, Emily Richards posted a first-place finish in the 1,500-meter run in 4:24.70.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Wapak graduate Taylor Fisher finished 15th in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.87.

Fort Recovery grad Danielle Sutter bested her season-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished 18th overall in 11:33.36.

The Polar Bear 4×400-meter relay team would wrap the meet up with a solid second place finish in the event, posting a team-best time of 3:55.66.

Maggie Krause, currently holding the nation’s seventh best vault, competed at the Baldwin Wallace Harrison Dillard Twilight meet, finishing third in the pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 10.5 inches.

Keeler Invitational

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Ohio Northern competed at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central (Ill.) College on Thursday and Friday.

No team scores were kept in the meet.

Ian McVey led the way for Northern on day one, breaking his season-best time in the 5,000-meter run and finishing eighth in the race in 14:36.85.

Alex Sibila finished third in the high jump, tying his career-high mark with a leap of 6 feet, 7 inches.

On the second day of the meet Matt Molinaro led the way with a second place finish in the 1,500-meter run in a season-best time of 3:51.14. His time moves him into 11th place nationally in the event.
