Brian Garman, the pitching coach for the Northwestern Ohio baseball team, has accepted an assistant coach position with the Inland Empire 66ers, the Los Angeles Angels Advanced Class A Affiliate in the California League, located in San Bernardino, CA. UNOH assistant coach Sean Stanley will take over the pitching coach duties.
“I want to thank coach Kory Hartman for the opportunity he gave me to join his staff,” said Garman. “This baseball program’s success is a testament to his desire to achieve success and the relentless pursuit of being a national contender.”
As I move on to join the Angels, I am leaving with total confidence that coach Stanley will easily fill the pitching coach role and continue the tradition that I was fortunate enough to inherit,” added Garman. “My future is full of uncertainty, which I am willing to embrace. I am prepared to move on, as I have had the good fortune to learn from each baseball coach on staff at UNOH.”
Last season, the Racer pitching staff set school records for team earned run average (2.88), shutouts (15), strikeouts (490), strikeouts per nine innings (9.68) and lowest opposing batting average (.229) with Garman at the helm.
Senior Damon Proctor was selected as the 2017 Perfect Game/Rawlings NAIA Pitcher of the Year as he went 13-0 on the mound with 129 strikeouts in 114 innings. He also threw the first perfect game in UNOH history on February 11, 2017, at Union.
“The UNOH baseball staff welcomed me with open arms, and they are nothing short of family to me,” said Garman. “I am grateful for each young man I have had the privilege to work with in my short time here, and I hope for nothing but success for all of them.”
Along with his duties at UNOH, Garman was also involved for four seasons with the Lima Locos of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, serving as the pitching coach for three years before being the manager in 2017. His 2017 squad won the league title after appearing in the finals in 2016. The Locos also won the title in 2015.
Garman came to Northwestern Ohio after an outstanding playing career. He was the Western Buckeye League and Northwest District Player of the Year as a junior and senior at nearby Wapakoneta High School and then earned Third Team All-Big East Conference honors as a senior at the University of Cincinnati, where he played from 2007-10.
Following college, Garman was drafted in the 17th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. He played for the Helena Brewers in the rookie Pioneer League in 2010, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the low Class A Midwest League in 2011, the Brevard County Manatees in the advanced Class A Florida State League in 2012 and with the Huntsville Stars in the Class AA Southern League in 2012.
